Our strategy 2017-22
Our overriding aim is to hold councils to account. In our audit work, we will evaluate how councils are demonstrating improvement. We expect councils to meet their statutory duty of Best Value by demonstrating a pace, depth and continuity of improvement in their performance. We recognise that it is for councils to make choices in where they focus their improvement work, but they need to be able to show how they have arrived at their choices.
We publish a strategy and annual action plan which sets out priorities for our work and how we will take them forward over the next five years.
We also produce an engagement strategy and plan each year, outlining how we will work with our stakeholders, and a report looking at how equality will be embedded in our work.

Ronnie Hinds, Acting Chair of the Commission, writes about the Strategy's wider focus, how the Commission is adapting to changes in local government and what it expects from councils.
