"I have found the ‘on the job’ training to be excellent, with plenty of people around to give a hand or answer a question. "

I joined Audit Scotland just under six months ago as a trainee auditor. I saw this as a great opportunity to work in an interesting job while training to gain a professional qualification.

Since joining, I have been working in Local Government, and had the chance to work in a variety of audit offices across Scotland, from the City of Edinburgh council to the Scottish Borders. The areas of work I have been exposed to have been both interesting and varied. I have found the ‘on the job’ training to be excellent, with plenty of people around to give a hand or answer a question. There is also a good focus on personal development both in technical and ‘soft’ skills.

I have recently begun the trainee programme leading to gaining the CiPFA qualification. The programme comprises classroom learning, which supplements the open learning material from CiPFA. The standard of teaching is high, with a focus on passing the exams.

The study leave afforded by Audit Scotland is very generous, which reflects the high level of commitment shown.

To sum up my experience so far, I would describe it as challenging, with a steep learning curve but ultimately rewarding.
