Publication: A clean bill of health? A review of domestic services in Scottish hospitals

by Auditor General

This report shows there is a wide variation in cleaning costs for hospitals which cannot be explained by the size of hospital, higher productivity or quality of service, and suggests ways in which better management of domestic services can reduce costs as well as improve the quality of cleaning and increase levels of infection control. This report highlights ways of managing staff absence and turnover, overtime hours, shift allowances and productivity payments; and reviewing the work content of domestics. Better management will encourage the development of an efficient and more flexible service which will help patients.
