Publication: Supporting prescribing in general practice

by Accounts Commission

An Accounts Commission study into the cost and quality of prescribing has found that GPs and pharmacists are improving their prescribing. The report suggests that further improvements in the quality of patient care should be possible and that savings of around £26 million a year could be released for other NHS priorities. The report makes wide-ranging recommendations to help GPs improve the treatment of patients and make budgets go further. Some of the changes will be relatively easy to make but most will require GPs to spend time reviewing their prescribing and discussing changes with patients.
